The Soul Thief

Category: Travel Portraits

Photo and caption by Carlos Rodríguez del Valle

I captured this photo last year in Delhi. When I looked through the viewfinder, this woman started to move from side to side, at the same time as she was staring at me. I had often heard of ancient cultures whose members believe their soul can be stolen by taking pictures of them, so they generally refuse to be photographed. It was not the case of this woman. In fact, it was me who was intimidated by her movement and her penetrating gaze. In those few seconds we looked each other eyes, I really felt as if she was trying to capture my soul... and in some way, she did it.

Location: Delhi, India.
