Mashhad is Iran's holiest city, its history closely linked to that of its main shrine, the tomb of the Eighth Imam of the Shi'a tradition, Imam Reza. It was believed that he died in 861 after being poisoned by Caliph Ma'mun, and his tomb became a Shi'a pilgrimage site. Today,thousands of pilgrims arrive each day.
