Momma and The Three Bears

Category: Outdoor Scenes

Photo and caption by Christine Mead

In the evening light, we came across momma and her 3 bear cubs. The mother bear had clearly been in a fight and was breathing hard with wounds on her left side. As we watched, her 3 cubs closed in beside her and cautiously settled down for the night. The late evening sun lit the cubs' eyes and the baby bear with white paws stole my heart. The mother bear's injuries and distress made me fearful for their survival, but over the next couple of days we saw the whole family several times, including clamming together on the beach.

Location: Silver Salmon Creek, Lake Clark National Park, Alaska, USA
