The Lone Cremation

Category: Sense of Place

Photo and caption by Colin Handy

Visiting one of the many beautiful temples of Nepal, I happened to pass the place for local cremations. They are all public and on seeking permission, was allowed to take a few photographs. I deliberately picked a shot where there was nothing to offend and no actual details of anything graphic are in the image. It was explained to me that the family had gone to celebrate this particular person's life and that they attain the services of a local cremator to complete the ceremony. Once the cremation is complete, the ashes are placed in the holy river to continue their journey. Very moving.

Location: Kathmandu, Nepal
