Category: Sense of Place

When my girlfriend and i trekked to see the Rugendo family of mountain gorillas in the Democratic Republic of Congo,we could not help but wonder how the animals would regard visitors given their tragic history. But once we were amongst them, the gorillas were quite tolerant of our presence. The chief silverback 'Bukima' laid on his back, initially seeming aloof. But before long, he rolled over and placed his fist under his chin and regarded us through the leaves with a prolonged, thoughtful expression. I held his gaze as long as I could before I had to look away.

Location: Virunga National Park, Democratic Republic of Congo
