Raising Prayers to the Heavens

Category: Spontaneous Moments

Photo and caption by James Kao

I was so excited the first time I saw prayer flags on a high hill when I arrived in Bhutan. I soon realized that they were ubiquitous and seemingly everywhere. What is rare to see though is a flag being erected. I got lucky while out early one morning while staying in the village of Ugen Choling in the Bumtang region and saw about ten village men in a field preparing to raise a new flag. The post was 60 feet long and its weight required all ten men to raise and set in place. Afterwards they invited me for a drink of traditional arra wine, which on an empty stomach is not recommended!

Location: Ugen Choling, Bhutan
