The Himba Girl With the Mona Lisa Smile

Category: Travel Portraits

Photo and caption by Teresa O'Kane

People of the Himba Tribe in Northern Namibia happily cling to their traditions. The women and girls wear nothing other than a skirt of soft goat-skin around their waists, and ochre on their hair and bodies. Handmade jewelry and head dress complete the picture. Tall and shapely, they are said to be among some of the most naturally beautiful women in the world. The Mona Lisa smile ever present on this girl of 12 caught my eye and captured my heart.

Location: Northern Namibia, Africa
