The original Fort Stanwix was built during the French and Indian War at the location of present-day Rome New York. It was abandoned in 1768 but then rebuilt during the American Revolution. The British failure to capture the fort in 1777 was an important victory for the Americans. The reconstruction of the fort by the National Park Service was completed in 1978.
