Snow Monkey Grab

Category: Spontaneous Moments

Photo and caption by Larry Malvin

The Jigokudani Monkey Park, located in central Japan, is known for the Japanese Macaques, or snow monkeys, that descend upon the valley and soak in the hot springs during the cold winter. The snow monkeys live in large social groups, playing with and grooming each other while oblivious to the human guests that visit each day with their cameras and video gear. This juvenile monkey was about to grab his unsuspecting spa mate just as I snapped the picture.

Location: Jigokudani Monkey Park, Nagano Prefecture, Japan
