Guard Mounting

Category: Sense of Place

The ceremony of Changing the Imperial Guard at Deoksu Palace - 덕수궁 (德壽宮) (19th to 20th centuries) in Seoul, is a focal point for the many thousands of tourists who visit Seoul in Korea each year. This intricate procedure facilitates the renewing of a guard at the end of its duty. The ceremony normally takes place every day in the spring and summer months and reverts to every other day during autumn and winter. Though most of the structures are fairly recent reproductions of the original palace built in the 15th century, the main gate showed here is over five-hundred years old.

Location: Seoul, Korea
