I took this photo when I was on a volunteer mission to take care of orphans born with disabilities in Barlad, Romania. Barlad is a tiny town in the Moldavia region of Romania, which is the poorest region in the European Union. While in Barlad, I was struck by the enormous generation gap between the children born into a free market society and the elderly, who lived the majority of their life under a Communist regime. The way the elderly woman stares at the "modern" woman and her child on roller blades summed up the generation gap far better than words ever could.
