I hiked to a small village with a priest stationed in Chahal. He visited over 300 villages in the region twice a year. The day of his visit was very special for the village because he would perform all sacraments (confessions, baptisms, first communions and marriages) that the village required until his return. I was an unexpected visitor on this special day and was ushered to the front of the dirt-floored church hut. The girls were very serious on this special day. They wore lace veils and held candles decorated with bougainvillea from the rain forest.
Location: small village north of Chahal, Alta Verapaz, Guatemala
