Poi Sang Long Festival

Photo and caption by Gail Palethorpe

One of many, this young boy is paraded on a relative's shoulders. The street is awash with a writhing mass of people in a kaleidoscope of colours all dancing to a cacophony of beating drums and smashing cymbals. Aged between 7 and 14, these young boys are to be ordained as novices to study Buddhist doctrines. This yearly ritual in the Mae Hong Son province is based on the belief that the Buddha's own son gave up everything worldly to follow in his father's footsteps.

Location: City of Pai, Region Mae Hong Son, Thailand
