Mother and Child

Category: Travel Portraits

Photo and caption by Gail Palethorpe

A boat ride from Mae Sai in the Golden Triangle on the Mae Khong River to a local Lao Village, where tourism and poverty clash in a duty free haven. Where a large moon bear is forlornly housed in a wooden and concrete cage only big enough for a rabbit run. Where knock off designer bags can be bought for a song, and alcohol and cigarettes are but a pittance in price. Amidst all this a forlorn young woman in shabby clothes nurses her child as she squats in the dirt.

Location: Lao Village, banks of the Mae Khong River, The Golden Triangle Thailand
