Flamingo Sunset at Mar Chiquita, Argentina

Mar Chiquita is home to thousands of migratory birds, including the Chilean flamingos silhouetted here. This saline lake, the largest in South America, is located in the province of Cordoba in northern Argentina. The lake's high productivity produces algae and invertebrates such as brine shrimp that support the bird community. In the 1980's the lake rose to a record high level, flooding towns and killing trees that were inundated with salt water. I was lucky to catch this beautiful sunset after biking to a beach west of the town of Miramar on an April afternoon.
