Tranquility at Haystack

Category: Sense of Place

Photo and caption by Thomas Dillon

After attempting to get this shot on three consecutive trips to Cannon Beach, only to be defeated by encroaching "marine layers," it finally came together on the fourth trip. I waited for almost two hours for the sun to set in an almost-cloudless sky, but everything worked out perfectly. This image, to me, personifies the tranquility of the Oregon Beaches that is so often hidden beneath the violent waters where the Pacific Ocean meets the west coast of the United States.

Location: Cannon Beach, Oregon
