Dont' Cry Baby Seal!

Category: Travel Portraits

Photo and caption by Ruslan Margolin

For only 2 weeks in early march , ~200,000 harp (aka Greenland) seals congregate on floating ice off the shore of Magdalene islands in northern Quebec/Canada. Pups are born snow white at 7-8kg and gain 3-5kg per day on the 85% fat-full milk diet. Then they shed the white, turn dark and are fully independent. The "tears" are produced to lubricate their giant black eyes.

Location: open water ice shelf off the Isles de le Magdale, Quebec, Canada
