Intolerable Conditions

Category: Sense of Place

A space no larger than four twin size beds, this underground slave cell from the Omani colonization of Zanzibar would hold over 50 slaves at a time before they were sold off at the weekly slave auction. Shackled together and only taken out of the cell to be sold, some of captured were forced to sleep next to the corpse of a slave left to rot in the wet conditions until the next slave auction.

Location: Mkunazini Road in the center of Old Town, Zanzibar.
