Candles during Timkat
Category: Sense of Place

Every Orthodox church in Ethiopia has a covered copy of the holy arch inside it. Timkat (Epiphany, 19-20 January) it is the only time when these copies are taken out of the churches during a procession and taken to an open space where they spend the night and the people light candles around them. This is the moment when a father offers a candle to his son, in the middle of hundreds of people celebrating.
Location: Addis Ababa, Ethiopia
