Father's Embrace

Category: Spontaneous Moments

A father embraces his son during the New Year Minstrel Carnival in Bo Kaap, Cape Town. Every January 2nd, the slaves of Cape Town were given their only day off in the year. To protest their enslavement, they sang songs of oppression and donned colorful costumes with painted faces. Today, the tradition continues as a symbol of freedom of expression.

Location: Bo Kaap, Cape Town, South Africa
