Lizard vs. Centipede Smackdown

Category: Spontaneous Moments

Photo and caption by Scott Winans

I discovered this centipede in my courtyard and upon further inspection, I heard a rustling noise in the nearby ivy. The lizard looked at me and then kept his focus on the centipede. I ran into the house and grabbed my camera, tripod, and 500mm reflex lens. I set up across the sidewalk and watched as the lizard attacked the centipede, grabbed the centipede by it's back, and kept chomping and thrashing the centipede. Over 20 minutes later, and 90 digital images, the lizard then started devouring it's prey. This image is one of the later images before the centipede was completely devoured.

Location: Las Cruces, New Mexico
