Slow Mover

Category: Spontaneous Moments

Photo and caption by Carita O'Connor

This three-toed sloth has just vacated his favorite guarumo tree and is on his way to a neighboring sangrillo tree. Sloths spend very little time on the ground, which is fortunate since the increase in human population in Puerto Viejo has created more dangers for these docile creatures. Domestic animals, vehicles and electrical cables and transformers are among the threats faced by sloths.

Location: Puerto Viejo de Limon, Costa Rica
