Treacherous road to school

Category: Travel Portraits

Photo and caption by Vera Hill (Neverkevich)

This photograph depicts two Zanskari girls on a 4-day trek along a frozen river, which they do a couple of times a year to go to school and thne back to reunite with their families. Average tempretures along the river are around -20C, and there are many perils along the way, such as fragile ice on the river and avalanches. Travellers sleep in caves along the way. Submitted on behalf of Ben Stephenson, Calgary, Canada.

Location: Kingdom of Zanskar, India
