Endangered San Juan Southern Resident Orca Breach

Category: Outdoor Scenes

Photo and caption by Kimberly Funchess

One of 87 remaining southern resident orcas in the San Juan island area of Washington currently on the endangered species list. What makes these southern resident orcas different from other orcas is that their diet only consists of fish, mostly salmon, instead of a mammal diet. This close family of orcas pass down to their offspring, specific dietary habits. What a blessing to have viewed these orcas!

Location: San Juan Island, WA (san juan county park)
