Unaltered remnants of a volcano crater which turned into a beautiful lake. Fire Lake is located in S. Miguel, the largest (293 sq mi) of the nine islands of the Azores. This enchanted archipelago, of volcanic origins, is located in the North Atlantic between Europe (930 mi east of Lisbon) and North America (2400 mi west of New York City). The islands were uninhabited until their discovery by Portuguese navigators in the 15th century. Now the Azores is an Autonomous Region of Portugal. Its main industries are: dairy farming, fishing and tourism.
