- Looking to escape the massive crowds at the Great Pyramids, I strayed from the beaten path to stumble upon this child tending to a camel. This image was taken just days before the Egyptian Revolution started in January of 2011. His expression reminds me of the saying "the quiet before the storm."

- This man waited patiently on Jimbaran Beach in Bali, Indonesia to sell corn to tourists after they ate their candlelit dinners on the beach. I waited and watched how the gorgeous sunset slowly started to match the lighting of his cart of corn and then walked over and asked him to take this portrait of him. I love how he gave me the "thumbs up".

- Dora and her husband are farmers living in the ancient valley of Vinales in northwest Cuba. This valley is studded with ancient limestone pillars called mogotes that stand like guardians over the fertile fields of tobacco and corn.

- Our surgical team spent 2 weeks in the Western Highlands of Ethiopia performing obstetric fistula and uterine prolapse surgeries last November. I've never seen so many smiling ladies in a hospital before. The love and gratitude was overwhelming. This little girl was an orphan living on the hospital grounds and would come hang out with us on our breaks. Her smile and infectious laugh were an unbelievable gift. I look at this picture often and can't wait to go back next year.
