- As the call from mosques sound throughout the city, men make their way to begin prayer at this time of Eid. They walk in clothes freshly dressed, through busy streets and building sites. These pipes are some of the obstacals, though also used as shade from the intense sun and as a place of social gathering once prayer has been be completed. As for now, men and boys will soon repetedly bow their heads, all the while strengthening their faith. And I wonder at times, do they ever ask Allah for particular blessings, or do their most intimate hopes remain nothing more than pipe dreams.

- Eunice Wanda lives in Kenyan countryside. She has more grandchildren than she can count. Both of her galoshes has holes in them but it doesn't matter. Somebody has to hoe the fields. This year (2010) has been good. Lots of rain and plentiful harvest. Still life is tough. Nobody knows about the next rain season. Eunice is proud and bows to nothing. She is the model of an independent woman of Africa.

- I visited my family in Saint Petersburg in December and had a chance to see my great aunt. We share the first name, Olya. She is 95, rarely leaves her apartment, yet she is very sharp and curious. She even tutors a neighbor's kid in math! She lived through Stalin's 1930s repressions, the Second World War, deaths of many relatives, including my grandma, her sister, and the collapse of the Soviet Union. She had to escape Tajikistan in 1990s, leaving everything behind, yet she brought her spirit and garden tools with her. Every time I'm there, I think: "Please, will I see you next time..."
