Soul Deity in parade

Category: Travel Portraits

Photo and caption by Matteo Fantolini

Thailand, Ko Phuket Legends, faith and popular belief are mixed with rootless barbaric rituals during the celebrations of the "9 Emperor Gods" festival. During the 9 days Festival, The Soul Deities welcome their guiding souls and submit to extreme mortifications in order to bear all evil that curses society. History and tradition have survived till our days with ostentatious demonstrations of exhibitionism that go far beyond common understanding. "I believe" they say, and their wounds heal within days with no infecions, but leaving hard evidence and indelible sign of deep devotion.

Location: Thalang district, Phuket Town, Ko Phuket, Thailand
