Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial

Category: Sense of Place

Photo and caption by Peter Burian

The cemetery in Normandy, France, on a bluff overlooking Omaha Beach, contains the graves of over 9000 Americans killed in WW II. It is featured in the beginning of the movie Saving Private Ryan. Visiting this cemetery is a very moving experience especially in late May and early June when additional flags (of France and the U.S.) are installed.

Location: Near Colleville-sur-Mer, France, on a bluff overlooking Omaha Beach
