Lone Piping Plover Chick
Category: Sense of Place
Photo and caption by Scott Solberg
The piping plover faces many threats after hatching. The most threatening is that they are precocial. In other words, they have to find food on their own the minute they hatch. This often forces them forage away from parental supervision and sometimes find themselves all alone in a very very big and dangerous world, unable to fly.
