This photo was taken during the highwater season in the Pueblo Libre section of Belen, Peru. Belen lies at the edge of Iquitos, in the floodplain of the Itaya River (a tributary of the Amazon) and consists of 65,000 inhabitants, most of them poor, many of whom live in extreme poverty. Most homes will float or are built on stilts, as the river rasies some 5-6 meters during February through July. Belen is a unique world community and has been referred to as the "Venice" of Latin America" 30 % of the population is under the age 12 , Including this boy whom greeted us his heartwarming smile.
Location: Belen, Maynas Province , Peru
