This settlement is a major tourist attraction in Octago. The Chinese were invited to this region in 1865 from the Victorian gold fields by the Otago Provincial Council . These miners huts reflect a time in history, a time of hardship and dreams, where prejudice was high ,when the vacant crown land would have appealed because it was on the outskirts of town away from the European settlements . Up to six men at a time inhabited these huts with small windows and a dirt floors. These huts are a symbol of the human spirit aspiring to build a better future.
