Kusicuna

Category: Spontaneous Moments

Photo and caption by Claire Velasquez

Kusicuna is Quechua (Andean language) for "to be happy." I took this photograph of Bolivian children playing with my American children one afternoon. For a few months, my family and I lived in a Bolivian mountainside home which was previously a school named Kusicuna. We shared the serene, beautiful property with a Quechua family who looked over and worked the land and whose children played with mine everyday. The scene reminds me of invaluable but diminishing natural green spaces in Bolivia and worldwide. The moment exposes children's innocence, how it transcends social and ethnic distinctions, and how very simple it truly is to make children happy.

Location: Tiquipaya, Cochabamba, Bolivia
