Theyyams: Gods on Earth

Category: Travel Portraits

Photo and caption by Gloria Kurnik

A young man preparing to enter a trance and become a god in the ritual of Theyyam. Theyyam is a worship of masses, emerged as an answer to their plights and misstreatment. Since only the "untouchables" have the right to perform the rites, Theyyam elevates the poorest to the level of the gods. In the caste system of India it is an unparalleled case. Theyyam is a reminder to everyone that god is everywhere.

Location: Kerala, India
