What Is and What Was

Category: Sense of Place

Photo and caption by Nina Embervine

This photograph was taken while visiting Roosevelt National Forest in May 2013 and standing in the middle of a "Fairy Circle" for the first time. A Fairy Circle occurs when a large Redwood tree is felled and smaller redwoods sprout up all along the base of the tree, forming a ring. When you stand inside of the circle when it is raining, it is said that you may see a rainbow. This photograph is of my husband as we shared a moment of silent awe and appreciation inside of this special ring.

Location: Roosevelt National Forest, CA
