Every year on the eight day of the fourth lunar month, the people of Kangding in China's western Sichuan province gather to commemorate the birthday of the Buddha, Sakyamuni, with a lavish display of song, dance, and prayer. As a social scientist and photographic ethnographer conducting a project that explores the nuances of spiritual tourism in rural China, I've often found my research subjects just as curious of me as I am of them. Such was the case with these dancers who were more than willing to trade photograph opportunities with me.
