Antelope Squirrel Babies, Carrizo Plains National Monument, California

Category: Outdoor Scenes

Photo and caption by Denise Murphy

My husband noticed the mom moving the babies to a new den. She was carrying them by their bottom so they were upside down in the move. Their little heads started pop out, one by one until all six were out. Mom went foraging and I was lucky enough to be able to hide at a low level and capture this shot. We originally went to Carrizo to try and get some nice captures of the San joaquin Kit Fox but weren't lucky. This photo made the entire trip worth it.
