A Shared Heritage

The young spear hunter needed no prompting or positioning. He held himself and his Kuku Yalanji heritage for these few moments on the mud flats of Cooya Beach that he races to every day after school. Growing up with this landscape is not only a bountiful playground for fun and learning but a backyard where this pint-sized fisherman’s father, grandfather and great grandfather shared stories of their land. It’s a place that has been nurtured for more than 100 years allowing future generations to practice and preach the ways of the past.
Location: Cooya Beach, Far North Queensland, Australia
