Layap child

Category: Travel Portraits

Photo and caption by Jo Broadhead

This photo was taken in the high mountain village of Laya in the himalayan kingdom of Bhutan. At 3,800m altitude and accessible only by foot (minimum three-day trek), this village retains a wonderful sense of remoteness. The Layaps (people of Laya) are ethnically distinct and this photo captures a wonderful sense of intrigue overcoming shyness for a local child when we trekked into the village after nine days on the Laya-Gasa trek. Locals may only see foreigners once or twice a year as the climate makes the trekking season very short.

Location: Laya, Gasa District, Kingdom of Bhutan
