African Glaciers

Category: Sense of Place

My brother and I were the first ones to reach the summit at Uhuru peak on Mount Kilimanjaro on Christmas morning 2012. We had waited and discussed climbing it for 18 years. Finally, after saving enough money and time, we got the chance. As we descended about 100 meters from the peak we were fortunate enough to see the sunrise reflecting off the Kilimanjaro glaciers high above the clouds in the distance. The sight of it was a pure moment of zen that one can only get on a mountain. The spectacular sight lasted less than a minute and just like that was over.

Location: Uhuru peak, Mount Kilimanjaro, Tanzania.
