The wedding of trees

The festival of May is a popular festival that is held every year in the town of Accettura (Italy), in occasion of the celebrations for the patron San Giuliano. It is an ancient wedding ceremony where the "Maggio", a tall tree, join a holly, the "Cima", representing the traditional cults arboreal very popular especially in the inland areas of Basilicata. On the day of Pentecost, the "Cima" is carried on the shoulders by groups of young people to the village, and the "Maggio" was driven from the country in fifty pairs of oxen. In this pic we can see the "Maggio" pulled by oxen with fatigue.

Location: Accettura, Italy
