Resilient Redwood

Category: Outdoor Scenes

Photo and caption by Kristen Vogel

Coast redwoods have suffered terrible losses due to logging and deforestation. But when a giant redwood is cut down several more redwood saplings may pop up around the stump. This circle of redwoods is known as a fairy ring and is actually one ginormous organism connected to one network of roots underground.

Location: Armstrong Woods, California
