Communal Bakery of Old Fez

Category: Sense of Place

Photo and caption by Dalia Bloze

Just as in medieval times, a boy leaves the communal bakery of the old medina with a tray of baked loaves for his family. Families prepare the loaves at home and take them to the public ovens for baking. A communal bakery was an essential feature of every medina in Morocco and these bakeries are still in use today.

Location: Fez, Morocco
