Maasai welcome dance

Category: Sense of Place

On safari this past February, we were invited to a Maasai village near the rim of Tanzania’s Ngorongoro Crater. Upon arrival, we found all the men and women of the village lined up to welcome us with their traditional dance – a combination of high-pitched chanting and rhythmic humming, with the men taking turns stepping forward to jump as high as they could, walking sticks in hand, and stomp the ground emphatically. The vibrant colors of their clothing popped against the muted natural colors of the yawning earth and sky behind them.

Location: Ngorongoro Crater, Tanzania
