A memory of elephants

On safari in Kenya’s Laikipia Plateau region this past February, we came upon several elephant families, none more beautiful than this one. As the massive matriarch led her charges slowly and quietly into the distant foothills, they became silhouetted in the shadow of a large cloud overhead and against the backdrop of the dwindling light of the late afternoon sky. Our guide told us that the collective noun for an elephant family is a "memory" of elephants. That they are in silhouette in this photo seems appropriate, as their distinct features now live only in my memory.
