Crowded in Kathmandu

Category: Sense of Place

The energy of Kathmandu is electrifying. The constant buzz of car and motorbike horns and the perpetually drifting sea of pedestrians leave little doubt that Kathmandu is densely populated. I climbed the 365 steps of the hill leading to Swayambhunath (Monkey Temple) to enjoy the sweeping panoramic views afforded by its vantage point. While visiting Swayambhunath provides a nice refuge from the intensity of the city, it also affords a striking visual reminder of the population density. I will never forget the 360-degree view of countless buildings across the horizon.

Location: Kathmandu, Nepal
