In Nepal, Durbar Square is the term used for the plazas located in front of the old royal palaces that were active when the country was divided into many small, independent kingdoms. During a particularly hot day in Kathmandu, a man dressed in a brilliant blue shirt took refuge from the midday sun in Durbar Square. His forlorn expression and slumped posture caught my eye as I sat in the shade in an adjacent building.
