The Dichotomy of Myanmar

Category: Sense of Place

It's impossible to articulate the essence of Myanmar. In many ways, it’s like other developed countries I’ve visited in southeast Asia, yet many parts seem stuck in the past, eagerly anticipating progress. I took this picture while sitting in the bed of a small pickup truck, riding from Sagaing to Mandalay. Sagaing is an important spiritual center known for its 500 pagodas that overlook the Ayeyarwady River. The contrast between the modernity of the bridge and the ancient pagodas in the distance remind me of the progress that Myanmar has made, but also of the progress that still needs to come.

Location: Sagaing, Myanmar
