Bishop Sigurd's basket

Category: Sense of Place

Photo and caption by Brenda Davenport

Sculptured statues on the west side of Nidaros Cathedral in Trondheim, Norway, are fascinating. Legend has it that around 997, the evangelist, Bishop Sigurd from England, found the heads of his nephews floating in a basket in the river. The carved calla lilies on the right the statue complement the basket contents.
