Category: Sense of Place

Photo and caption by elizabeth havelin

The silversword plant (base shown here) grows atop Haleakala at 10,000.' Watching sunrise is a popular activity at the park. The silverswords get to enjoy every sunrise, then visits from their admiring fans kept at safe distance. The volcanic soil can be sharp therefore it can damage some of it's root system if we get too close.

Location: Haleakala National Park Maui, HI.
